Michelle's Story

IMG_2667.jpg
Michelle served as the first African American woman to lead the City Council in Richmond, the
capital of the country’s 12th-largest state. Her team delivered budget surpluses every year and
helped boost Richmond’s bond rating to AA+—just one tick away from Wall Street’s top rating.
Under her coalition-building leadership, the City built new schools, invested in the riverfront,
and launched bus rapid transit, the most significant public transportation upgrade in a
generation. Richmond’s population grew, and the City began the difficult work of confronting
entrenched poverty. This work earned Michelle honors from Central Virginia’s pro-business
Greater Richmond Partnership.
Michelle is an entrepreneur. She launched her first business—a cosmetology salon in the city of Richmond—more than 20 years ago, and it is still going strong today, employing nearly a dozen professionals. She has worked in real estate for more than two decades, soaring to become a top producer at both Century21 Signature and Icon Realty Group, serving the Richmond metropolitan area in real estate sales valued at more than $13 million.

Michelle founded the Help Me Help You Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that help citizens returning from incarceration successfully manage the transition into employment. She serves as President of the organization, which has helped more than 600 people shape their own path to long-term stability.
